How to Replace the Exhaust System on a Nissan Pathfinder

How to Replace the Exhaust System on a Nissan Pathfinder

Replacing the exhaust system as a whole or in pieces requires some inspection of the components to determine what is damaged or worn out. The exhaust system is responsible for removing spent gases and fumes from the engine and out the back of the vehicle. If it has holes or leaks, it can become dangerous to the passengers inside the vehicle. You can purchase the parts of the system in sections or buy the whole system at most auto parts stores.

Instructions

    1

Raise your Pathfinder off the ground with a jack. Support it with jack stands under all four corners of the truck. Make sure the truck is high enough that you can work under it comfortably while still being stable.

    2

Remove the clamp holding the tailpipe to the rear of the muffler by loosening the nuts on the clamp with a wrench and separate the two pipes. Remove the tail pipe from the hanger at the rear of the truck by pulling the pin on the pipe out of the rubber hanger on the truck and working the pipe loose from the muffler. Move the pipe out from under the truck.

    3

Locate and remove the bolts that secure the muffler to the front right and left exhaust pipes. These are the pipes that come down from the exhaust manifolds. There is a flange on each pipe with a gasket and two bolts that hold the muffler to these pipe sections.

    4

Remove the two hangers that hold the muffler up by removing the bolts from them using a ratchet and socket. There are two on each hanger. Drop the muffler down to the ground and remove it from under the truck.

    5

Remove the nuts from the manifold studs where the front pipes attach. There are two nuts on each pipe and a bronze O-ring that seals the pipe to the manifold. Remove the pipes and O-rings and discard them.

    6

Install a new right and left front pipe after installing the new bronze O-ring in the pipe. Slide the pipe onto the manifold studs then install the nuts. Tighten the nuts with a socket and ratchet until they are secure and do not move around.

    7

Install the new muffler to the front pipes and install a new gasket in between the two flanges. Insert the mounting bolts and tighten them with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Reinstall the hangers and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet or wrench.

    8

Install the new tailpipe by sliding the tailpipe onto the pipe exiting the rear of the muffler and slide the hanger pin into the rubber hanger at the rear of the truck. Install a new exhaust clamp on the joint between the muffler and tail pipe and tighten the nuts with a wrench or socket and ratchet.

    9

Remove the jack stands from under the truck and use a jack to carefully lower the truck down to the ground.
