How to Lube K100 Splines

The K100 spline is found on motorcycles. It is located on the rear of motorcycles at each end of the drive shaft, on a large ring that transmits the power to the rear wheel. No matter what type of spline you have or the manufacturer of your motorcycle, the spline must be lubricated when the tire is being changed. This helps ensure your motorcycle is running smoothly, and the proper power is being transmitted to the rear wheel.

Instructions

    1

Turn off the motorcycle and verify it is cooled down before attempting to lube up the rear spline. Find the proper type of grease to lube up the spline. The grease is at least 60 percent molybdenum. This dry lubricant bonds to metal surfaces and offers great lubrication.

    2

Jack up the motorcycle with a car jack. Slide the jack underneath the motorcycle and lift up the motorcycle. Remove the back tire with a tire iron. Loosen the lug nuts by turning the tire iron counterclockwise. Set the lug nuts aside and remove the tire from the motorcycle.

    3

Locate the spline. It is the brass-colored bump in the middle of the drive ring. Wipe down the grease and any debris located on the spline with a rag until it is completely clean.

    4

Pour the grease on a clean rag and wipe it down over the spline. Move in a circular motion over the entire surface until it is covered in the molybdenum grease. Cover the entire spline in grease as if you were applying a coat of paint to it.

    5

Put the tire back on upon completion and lower the jack so the motorcycle is sitting flat on the ground.
