How to Convert Freon

How to Convert Freon

If you have an older car, you may be using an inefficient or expensive freon solution, such as R12 refrigerant, to cool the air conditioner. This standard is antiquated and should be converted when possible, especially if you have run out of freon and must find a new supply. You can convert to a less expensive and more efficient cooler using a few easy steps.

Instructions

    1

Remove your older refrigerant using a refrigerant recovery machine. Vacuum the machine for three to five minutes to ensure that is has all been removed. If there is still positive pressure after this step, continue vacuuming until it is entirely removed.

    2

Use a low- and high-pressure valve to attach around the corresponding freon valves. Twist them on tightly to the old tube.

    3

Turn on the car and air conditioner. Attach a hose with the newer freon refrigerant (preferably R134) to the high-pressure valve.

    4

Twist the T-valve on the vehicle slowly, so that you allow a small amount of the new freon in the hose. Afterward, shut the T-valve off and attach the other end of the hose to the low-pressure valve and repeat until the can is empty.

    5

Check to make sure that the air conditioner in the car is blowing cool air. Remove the hose and replace the plastic caps on the two valves.
