How to Replace the Oil Pump in a 1993 Ford Explorer
The oil pump in the 1993 Ford Explorer is a sump pump. This means the pump submerges into the oil in the oil pan and the pump pushes oil to the engine. This is a lot of work for a small pump. Over time, the pump weakens and the engine does not get the oil it needs to run properly. If this happens, you must replace the oil pump. Unfortunately, this task is labor intensive because you must remove the oil pan to get to the pump.
Instructions
- 1
Drive the Ford Explorer onto a set of ramps. Shut off the engine and set the parking brake for safety.
2Open the engine hood and remove the oil filler cap and oil dipstick.
3Place a drain pan under the oil pan drain plug and remove the plug using a socket and ratchet. Drain the oil into the drain pan and then insert the drain plug and tighten it.
4Remove the bolts that secure the oil pan to the bottom of the engine block, using your socket and ratchet. Pry the pan free from the block using a metal scraper and then pull the pan out from under the Explorer.
5Unplug the wiring harness connected to the oil pump.
6Remove the jam nut that secures the oil pump to the oil pickup tube using an adjustable wrench. Turn the pump counterclockwise to remove it from the oil pickup tube.
7Thread the new oil pump onto the oil pickup tube and tighten it using the jam nut and the adjustable wrench.
8Plug the wiring harness back into the oil pump.
9Scrape the old gasket material off the mating surfaces of the engine block and the oil pan. Wipe any old oil off the mating surfaces using a clean shop towel.
10Place the gasket onto the mating surface of the oil pan, place the oil pan against the bottom of the engine block and, using the socket and ratchet, secure the pan to the block. Tighten the bolts in an alternating pattern from side to side.
11Place a funnel into the oil filler spout and pour four quarts of oil into the engine.
12Release the parking brake and drive the Ford off the ramps onto level ground. Shut off the engine and let it cool. Using the oil dipstick, check the oil level and add oil as needed. Replace the dipstick and filler cap.
