How to Repair a Rusted Quarter Panel

How to Repair a Rusted Quarter Panel

Automobiles are subject to both interior and exterior rusting. The metals used to construct the car may lose their rust-proof coating and become exposed to moisture. This can lead to rust, an electrochemical process in which the molecules of the metal and the water interact. The quarter panel on an auto may also form rust due to dents, scratches and other common damages to cars. Repairing the rust is easy to do if removed early; however, the longer the rust remains on the quarter panel or any other area of the car, the more the rust will spread.

Instructions

    1

Scrub off the surface rust of the panel with a wire brush, scrubbing pad or steel wool pad. These products get rid of the top layer of rust.

    2

Pour a small amount of naval jelly onto a steel wool pad. Scrub pad into the rust on the panel. Let stand for about 5 to 10 minutes so the phosphoric acid in the naval jelly can dissolve the rust.

    3

Clean away the rust and naval jelly with a rag or paper towels. Reapply naval jelly if rust is still on the panel.

    4

Paint on a rust-proof primer with a paint brush. The primer provides a protective coating for the panel.

    5

Touch up the areas with paint in the same color as the auto. Let dry.
