Immobilizer Failure

An immobilizer is an electronic device that prevents an automobile from starting unless the person trying to start it has the correct key. Its purpose is to prevent thieves from "hot wiring" a car.

Cause

Immobilizer failure may be the result of ignition module failure, in which case the CIM must be reprogrammed. The CIM is a module usually found in the steering column that controls many of the electronic systems in the vehicle. It also may be the result of the failure of a critical system component, such as the transponder carrier.

Repair Cost

In the case of an ignition module failure, replacement of the module and CIM reprogramming cost between $400 and $500 in January 2011. If the complete system needs replaced, cost was upward of $1,500.

Deactivation

It also is possible for immobilizers to become deactivated. Always make an effort to ensure your immobilizer has truly failed before submitting to expensive maintenance services.
