How to Install an Oil Pump in a 6 5 Turbo Diesel

General Motors manufactured a 6.5-liter diesel engine from 1992 to 1999. It typically had a turbocharger and was most common in heavy trucks made by General Motors during this period. The purpose of the oil pump is to lubricate the moving parts by circulating oil through the engine. The oil pump on the General Motors 6.5-liter turbo diesel engine is under the engine, and is part of the oil pan assembly.

Instructions

    1

Raise the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Place a drain pan under the drain hole in the crankcase. Remove the drain plug with a socket wrench, and let the oil drain into the pan. Replace the drain plug.

    2

Rotate the crankshaft manually so that the No. 1 and No. 2 connecting rods are in the up position. Remove the mounting bolts for the oil pan with a socket wrench. Lower the oil pump to gain access to the fuel pump.

    3

Disconnect the mounting bolts for the oil pump with a socket wrench. Allow the oil pump and its extension shaft to fall into the oil pan. Detach the pan from the vehicle.

    4

Mount the new oil pump into position on the main bearing cap. Align the extension shaft with the oil pump drive and push the pump into place. Fasten the mounting bolts for the oil pump and tighten them to 65 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench.

    5

Install the oil pan with a socket wrench and lower the vehicle. Fill the engine with oil. Start the engine and correct any oil leaks.
