How to Access Trouble Codes on a 1994 BMW 530i

You can access trouble codes on your 94 BMW 530i right from your home garage, saving yourself time and money. To access the codes you must purchase or borrow an OBD I code scanner. These small, computerized devices are available at your local auto parts retailer. The scanner reads trouble codes stored in the vehicles On-Board Diagnostics computer. Each code gives you specific information about the vehicle to help you diagnose the problem with your BMW.

Instructions

Locate a port on the drivers side dashboard near the steering column. This port is the same size and shape as the connector end on the OBD I code scanner. Plug the scanner into the port, taking care not to shove it in and bend the pins.

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, but dont crank the engine. This will power on most scanners. If not, look for an "on/off" button on the scanner and press it.

Select "Retrieve Codes" or other similar command on the scanner. Wait for the scanner to display the trouble codes. Write them down on a piece of paper. Look up the codes in the code scanners manual.

Unplug the scanner and have the vehicle serviced or repaired based on the diagnostic trouble codes.
