How to Open the Trunk of a Car When a Key Doesnt Work

Most cars built today offer multiple ways to access the trunk. Remote controls, keys and manual trunk releases all allow access to the trunk compartment. When one or more of these methods becomes impossible due to a bad or lost key, accessing the trunk can be more of a challenge. However, there are ways to get into the trunk in desperate situations.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the trunk release button or latch located near the driver seat. Most current vehicles have a manual trunk release. The release is usually located on the left floorboard near the driver seat, on the driver door below the armrest area or on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel.
2Fold down the back seat to access the trunk area and crawl into the trunk and pull the manual safety release. All vehicles built since 2002 are required to have a glow-in-the dark manual safely release in the trunk to prevent children or others from being accidentally locked in.
3Contact a locksmith or your auto dealer. A locksmith will be able to pop open the lock and may be able to get a new key made for the lock. A dealership may be be able to create or order a new key if provided the vehicle identification number and proof of ownership. If the passenger compartment is also locked and inaccessible, contacting the dealer or a locksmith will help prevent damage being caused to the vehicle during attempts to get inside.

How to Determine the Ignition Resistance Value of 2004 Chevy Silverado Without the Key
GM and other manufacturers had a brainstorm during the late 1980s -- installing a resistor in a vehicles key to act as a second layer of security in addition to the physical lock cylinder. And it works well, when it does work -- and when you have the original key. But keys and cars dont always travel together and getting a matching key can be expensive. So youve got two options: you can bypass the whole system, or you can test the sensor to get its r-code and the right key.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the plastic shroud around the steering column in order to access the lock cylinder mechanism. The exact procedures for removing the plastic column covers will vary by truck, depending upon the options you specified. But look all around the shrouding, locate all the relevant screws and remove them. You should now see the ignition lock and the three wires -- orange/black, yellow and red/white -- connected to the Passlock II sensor.
2Cut the orange/black starter wire and strip the ends so that you can reconnect it afterward. Do the same with the yellow Passlock II sensor wire. Crimp a male and female weather-tight quick-disconnect onto the ends of the wires so that you can quickly reconnect or disconnect them as needed.
3Set your digital multimeter to read in ohms. Touch the negative (black) probe to a body ground, and the positive (red) probe to the key-side yellow Passlock wire. The resistor that your measuring is contained within the Passlock sensor itself, so thats what youll be measuring.
4Turn your ignition key to the "start" position, and monitor the readout on your DMM. Record the reading in ohms. Repeat three to four more times, record each measurement and calculate the average. The PL2 sensor may not give the same reading every time, but the computer expects a bit of variance. You should see a reading of between 400 and 13,700 ohms; this is the resistance or "r-code" of your trucks ignition.

How to Program a Smart Key for a Mercedes

Smart keys are similar to keyless entry key fobs that come standard with many vehicles. Mercedes-Benz smart keys allow you to keep your key in your pocket, handbag or elsewhere on your person when unlocking and locking your doors. One of the biggest benefits of the smart key is that you dont need to dig it out of your overly full handbag in dark parking lots or in the rain. Each Mercedes smart key is programmed with a code that matches its specific vehicle.
Instructions
- 1
Place your key in the ignition of your Mercedes-Benz, without turning the ignition on. Look for a glowing red light on the key, which means that your car is programming itself to your key. This process can take up to an hour to complete. This method of programming does not work on every year or model.
2Call your local Mercedes-Benz dealership if you tried programming your key in the ignition unsuccessfully. Schedule a time to visit the dealership to have your keys programmed to your vehicle.
3Provide the Mercedes dealership with the key code to your car, which is located in your purchase paperwork, or with the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your Mercedes, by which the dealer can determine the key code to your vehicle. Wait while your vehicles keys are programmed and pay for your smart keys.
