How to Turn the Distributor on a 1985 Camaro 2 8 With a V 6 Engine
The distributor on the 1985 Chevrolet Camaro is the main component that the spark plugs receive their voltage from. The distributor also supplies the proper firing order to the spark plugs to keep the engine in time. The gears on the bottom of the distributor shaft are turned by the camshaft. As the camshaft turns the distributor shaft, the distributor shaft turns the rotor inside of the distributor cap. The rotor then turns inside of the distributor cap and supplies the spark plugs with the proper amount of voltage to keep the engine timed.
Instructions
- 1
Park the 1985 Chevrolet Camaro in a safe working area and open the hood. Shut the motor off and engage the parking brake.
2Raise the hood and prop it in place. Locate the distributor cap near the back of the engine. All of the spark plug wires are attached to the top of the distributor cap.
3Mark a straight line on the front side of the distributor cap with a marker. Also mark another straight line on the front side of the distributor cap base directly below the other line. This will help you remember the exact setting of the distributor before moving it.
4Loosen the hold-down screws on the bottom side of the distributor with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
5Grab the distributor with both hands and turn it clockwise to retract the timing. Turn the distributor counterclockwise to advance the timing. Be sure to make short turns when turning the distributor. Once the distributor is timed to your liking, screw the hold-down screws back down tight with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

How to Change the Fuel Pump in a 1991 Z28 Camaro
The Chevrolet Camaro is a muscle car that has been in continuous production since 1967. The 1991 Z28 Camaro is a third-generation Camaro, which Chevrolet made from 1982 to 1992. This was the first generation of Camaros to come equipped with fuel injection. The 1991 Z28 Camaro used multi-port fuel injection, which requires a high-pressure fuel pump. The replacement fuel pump for this car must match the engine, which may be an eight-cylinder 5.0-liter engine or an eight-cylinder 5.7-liter engine.
Instructions
- 1
Disconnect the cable for the negative terminal on the battery, using a socket wrench. Loosen the filler cap on the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank.
2Place a siphon hose into the filler neck of the fuel tank. Siphon as much fuel as possible into a container approved for gasoline. Raise the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the neck shield for the fuel filler, and remove the rear axle. Disconnect the bolts for the exhaust pipes with a socket wrench, and remove the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifold. Disconnect the heat shield for the exhaust system with a socket wrench. Clean the pipes and hoses for the fuel system around the fuel tank with a shop rag. Locate the fuel sender assembly on the fuel tank. The main body of this unit is inside the fuel tank, while its hose and electrical connectors are accessible from the top of the fuel tank. Disconnect the hoses to the fuel sender assembly, and detach the electrical connection for the fuel sender. Support the fuel tank, and remove the bolts for the fuel tank straps. Remove the fuel tank straps and fuel tank from the vehicle.
3Clean the area around the fuel sender assembly with a shop rag. Turn the retaining cam on the fuel sending unit counter-clockwise with tool J-24187, and remove the retaining cam. Remove the fuel sending unit from the fuel tank, and discard the O-rings. Detach the fuel pump from the fuel sending unit.
4Attach the new fuel pump to the fuel sending unit. Place a new O-ring in the groove on the fuel tank, and place another new O-ring on the feed tube of the fuel sender unit. Ensure that the strainer on the fuel pump is horizontal and does not impede the movement of the float arm on the fuel sender unit. Fold the strainer caully to avoid damage as you place the fuel sending unit into position on the fuel tank.
5Fasten the retaining cam onto the fuel sender unit by turning it clockwise with tool J-24187. Connect the heat shield and exhaust pipes for the exhaust system. Connect the fuel tank and lower the vehicle. Fill the fuel tank and fasten the filler cap on the fuel tank. Connect the cable for the negative terminal on the battery with a socket wrench.

How to Replace Spark Plugs on a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro
The spark plugs on the 1999 Chevrolet Camaro engine are designed to provide the spark to the combustion chamber. The spark causes the gas fumes inside of the chamber to ignite. This combustion process allows the piston to compress up and down which in return enables the engine to crank and run. The spark plugs are powered by the distributor. As the inside of the distributor is turning, it supplies the power to the plugs. Over time, the plugs will foul out or corrode. Once this happens, change the spark plugs as soon as possible for maximum engine performance.
Instructions
- 1
Pull the 1999 Chevrolet Camaro into a safe work area and set the parking brake. Open the hood and prop it in place.
2Locate the row of spark plugs on both sides of the engine block. The six-cylinder engines will have three spark plugs on each side of the engine block and the eight-cylinder engines will have four spark plugs on both sides of the engine block.
3Move to the driver side of the engine block and remove the first spark plug wire that is closest to the front of the vehicle. Twist and pull out on the spark plug wire at the same time. Only replace one plug at a time to prevent crossing the plug wires.
4Slide a long extension and a deep-well socket over the spark plug. Position a ratchet onto the extension and turn the spark plug counter clockwise until the plug is loose. Remove the ratchet, extension and socket from the plug and finish unscrewing the plug with your hand. Pull then plug out of the spark plug hole.
5Screw the new spark plug into the spark plug hole until it is completely hand tight. Position the ratchet, extension and socket over the new plug and tighten the plug another one-quarter of a turn to completely seat the spark plug to the plug hole. Push the plug wire back over the tip of the spark plug until it locks on to the plug. Gently pull out on the plug to ensure that it is secured to the plug.
6Move to the other spark plugs and repeat the same process for replacing the spark plugs. Be sure to only replace one plug at a time and to make sure that the plug wires are securely attached to the spark plugs.

How to Remove a Camaro Dash

The Camaro is a muscle car made by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. The Camaro hit the market in 1966 for the 1967 model year to compete directly against the Ford Mustang. The Camaro dashboard is known to warp, especially on the passenger side. Over time, as these cars age, the interior dashboard often cracks and fades. Because the Camaro is built in many sections for ease of part replacement, you can remove the dash by removing a series of screws in some hard-to-find places.
Instructions
- 1
Open the glove box and remove the three or four screws leading into the dash.
2Lie on your back on the drivers side and look up under the steering column. Remove the two screws in the rear.
3Remove the two screws near the radio.
4Remove the molding around the radio.
5Remove any other peripherals on the dash.
6Shimmy the dash loose and pull it up, off and away from the body of the car.
