Jeep Cherokee Parking Brake Lever Removal
The brake lever sits in the center console of the Jeep Cherokee. The emergency brake cable runs under the Jeep and attaches from the bottom side, joining the two rear cables with the single front cable. While failure of the lever assembly is not common, the ratcheting gears inside the handle and the locking mechanism can fail. Those parts cannot be serviced individually. You have to replace the entire assembly to fix a problem with the lever or the components inside it.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the front of your Cherokee off the ground with a jack. Position a set of jack stands under the frame to support the Jeep. Slide under the Jeep and locate the parking brake equalizer, which is directly under the parking brake lever.
2Remove the nut from the tension rod with a wrench. Slide the equalizer off the tension rod. Remove the front cable from the tension rod and lay it aside. Slide out from under the Jeep. Open the passengers door so you can access the center console and the brake lever.
3Open the center console. Locate the two screws at the top edge of the trim panel that extends from the top of the console to the front of the brake lever cutout. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
4Pull the brake handle up then lift the rear of the trim panel up several inches. Slide the trim panel back to release it from the front of the center console and lift it off the brake lever.
5Locate the electrical connector on the brake lever switch near the bottom of the brake handle assemble. It is on the drivers side near the back of the assembly. Pull the connector off the switch and set the connector aside.
6Remove the two retaining bolts from the brake handle assembly with a socket and ratchet. Lift the assembly out of the console and remove it from the Jeep.

How to Install Weatherstripping on a Jeep Cherokee

You can install weatherstripping on your Jeep Cherokee in your garage with a few supplies that can be purchased at an auto parts store. Replacing the weatherstripping on a Jeep Cherokee improves the seal formed between the door frame and the closed vehicle door. Weatherstripping prevents air and moisture from entering the Jeep and ruining the interior. You will know its time to install new weatherstripping when the old weatherstripping becomes cracked, loses its shape and wont seal the door properly.
Instructions
- 1
Find the clips that secure the weatherstripping to the Jeep. Remove them with needle-nose pliers. Place the clips in a cup and set aside.
2Pull the old weatherstripping off of the Jeep with your hands. Each piece of weatherstripping will slide right off the door frame channel.
3Wipe degrease agent with a rag onto the door frame weatherstripping channel. This will remove all the grease and dirt.
4Slide new weatherstripping onto the channel on the door frame.
5Reattach the clips to the weatherstripping, pushing them over the top of the stripping and attaching them to the Jeeps door frame. You will hear them snap into place when properly attached.

How to Repair a Jeep Cherokee Liftgate

After years of constantly being opened and closed, the liftgate on a Jeep Cherokee will begin to wear out. The liftgate is supported by two hydraulic arms to keep the door in the air when opened. Occasionally these will begin to wear out causing the door to fall down. The locking mechanism on liftgates will often "dry out" and becoming stuck, preventing you from opening and closing the door. Both repairs should be done at the same time to ensure proper opening, closing and locking of the liftgate for years to come.
Instructions
- 1
Pull the rear seat release straps and move the rear seat forward. Climb inside of the rear cargo area. Using a screwdriver, remove the retaining screws from the lock assembly molding located at the bottom of the liftgate.
2Lift the threaded latching bolt -- it has a green plastic tab located on its base -- by using a set of pliers. Pull until you hear the liftgate pop open. Slide the green plastic tab to the left, and it will snap off the latching bolt. Adjust the latching bolt to the position needed to freely open and close the liftgate. Replace the green plastic tab back onto the bolt. Spray all moving parts of the lock and latch assembly with the aerosol lubricant. Wipe clean with a shop towel. Replace the liftgate trim, and tighten bolts with screwdriver.
3Open and fully extend the liftgate with a friend supporting it in the air. Using a screwdriver, remove the old support bolts from the liftgate and vehicle until the support arm comes free. Place the new support arm where the old support arm was removed from and insert support arm bolts to keep it in place. Use the screwdriver to tighten all support arm bolts. Lower the liftgate to ensure alignment, and adjust if needed.

How to Test an 88 Cherokee Ignition Switch
The ignition switch in your 88 Cherokee carries the signal that is initiated by the operator of the vehicle to the starter. The starter then turns over the engine and starts your Cherokee. If you have been encountering difficulty when you go to turn over your engine, you should perform an ignition switch test. If you can no longer maintain a continuous flow of power to the interior lights, gauges or radio in your Cherokee, you should also perform this test to help you diagnose potential problems with the switch.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the fuse block below the dash on the left side of the brake and clutch pedals.
2Pull the plastic cover off the fuse block and locate the fuse for the ignition; it is the first fuse on the top left side of the fuse block.
3Pull the fuse straight out to unplug it from the fuse block.
4Inspect the fuse for damage. If you notice corrosion at the metal base piece of the fuse, replace it with a new fuse.
5Prop open your hood and rotate the multimeters knob until it sits at the "Volts" setting. A multimeter measures electrical voltage, current and resistance through digital or analogue meters. Some multimeter models additionally read temperatures, inductance, frequencies, capacitance and duty cycles.
6Hold the red probe on the multimeter to the positive port on your battery. Hold the black probe on the multimeter against the frame of your Cherokee. A working battery will provide a voltage reading of 12.6 volts on the multimeter. If you read any voltage amount less than 12.6 volts, replace your battery.
7Insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it to start your engine. If the engine starts, you do not have a problem with the ignition switch. If your engine does not start, listen for a single-click sound as you rotate the key to the "III" mark. If you do not hear this sound, you need to replace the ignition switch because it is broken.

How to Remove a Charcoal Canister in a Grand Cherokee
The charcoal canister -- technically called the EVAP canister -- is part of the vehicles evaporative emission control system. It works with the natural vacuum leak detection (NVLD) pump to store gas vapors and keep them out of the atmosphere. This canister should last as long as the vehicle, but you may need to remove it to work on other components like the fuel tank. On the Jeep Grand Cherokee, it is mounted to the vehicle with multiple brackets and connected through hoses. This procedure may vary depending on the vehicles exact year.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the vehicles rear end using a floor jack and support it on jack stands. The charcoal canister is directly in front of the fuel tank, which is on the side of the vehicle with the filler door, and the hoses/wiring are connected on the canisters left side.
2Squeeze the inner edges on the release tabs to the EVAP hoses light-colored connector to release their locking teeth from the canister pipes raised ridge. Pull the connector off the pipe to disconnect the hose.
3Push the sliding lock on the NVLD pumps electrical connector away from the pump and toward the wiring harness to move it to the release position. Press the release tab near the lock and pull the connector off to disconnect the electrical connector.
4Disconnect the filter hose from the NVLD pump, which is on the opposite side of the electrical connector.
5Press the locking tabs at the canisters right-side mounting brackets with a screwdriver to disengage the canister from the brackets.
6Swing the canisters right end out and away from the vehicle and disengage the mounting slot from the tab at the left mounting bracket to remove the canister.
