Jeep Cherokee Parking Brake Lever Removal
The brake lever sits in the center console of the Jeep Cherokee. The emergency brake cable runs under the Jeep and attaches from the bottom side, joining the two rear cables with the single front cable. While failure of the lever assembly is not common, the ratcheting gears inside the handle and the locking mechanism can fail. Those parts cannot be serviced individually. You have to replace the entire assembly to fix a problem with the lever or the components inside it.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the front of your Cherokee off the ground with a jack. Position a set of jack stands under the frame to support the Jeep. Slide under the Jeep and locate the parking brake equalizer, which is directly under the parking brake lever.
2Remove the nut from the tension rod with a wrench. Slide the equalizer off the tension rod. Remove the front cable from the tension rod and lay it aside. Slide out from under the Jeep. Open the passengers door so you can access the center console and the brake lever.
3Open the center console. Locate the two screws at the top edge of the trim panel that extends from the top of the console to the front of the brake lever cutout. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
4Pull the brake handle up then lift the rear of the trim panel up several inches. Slide the trim panel back to release it from the front of the center console and lift it off the brake lever.
5Locate the electrical connector on the brake lever switch near the bottom of the brake handle assemble. It is on the drivers side near the back of the assembly. Pull the connector off the switch and set the connector aside.
6Remove the two retaining bolts from the brake handle assembly with a socket and ratchet. Lift the assembly out of the console and remove it from the Jeep.

1993 S10 Starter Removal
The removal of a 1993 S10 starter requires you to be under the Chevy truck so you can easily reach the components needed to remove it from the vehicle. Although the starter is located on the bell housing of the S10, the process for actually removing it is not overly difficult because you can reach it without removing unnecessary components.
Instructions
- 1
Place the front of the vehicle on jack stands and secure it by placing a wheel chuck behind the rear tire.
2Open the engine hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Leave the engine hood open to allow additional light to get under the S10.
3Locate the starter next to the bell housing on the bottom drivers side of the engine. Use the replacement starter as a visual aid.
4Remove the starter wire that bolts onto the back of the starter by removing the nut that secures the wire to the starter with a socket and ratchet.
5Remove the three bolts that secure the starter to the bell housing with a socket and ratchet and then pull the starter gear free from the bell housing.
6Disconnect the wiring connector that connects the starter solenoid to the electrical system. Push in on the center tap on the connector and pull on it to release it from the solenoid.
7Connect the wiring connector to the solenoid on the replacement starter.
8Place the gear of the starter into the bell housing and bolt the starter into place.
9Reconnect the large starter wire and tighten it with the nut.
10Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Ashtray Removal for a Volvo 850
The Volvo 850 is a compact luxury car that was manufactured from 1992 to 1997. The 850 was the first front-wheel drive car from Volvo to be exported to the United States. Standard 850 interior accessories include power windows and door locks, tilt/telescopic steering column, air conditioning, cruise control and a CD-ready, AM/FM cassette stereo system. The ashtray is below the stereo. A second ashtray is on the back of the center console, behind the front seats. Both ashtrays are easy to remove, requiring no tools.
Instructions
- 1
Look for the panel below the radio. It has the word "PUSH" on it. Press lightly on the panel to open it.
2Put your fingers on the sides of the removable gray tray part of the ashtray and push it back.
3Pull up on the tray and remove it from the dash. The tray is the only part that can be removed for cleaning.
4Pull out on the rear ashtray to open it, and then lift up on the rear edge to remove it.

The Removal of a Belt Driven Fan on a 1999 Dodge Dakota
Removing the mechanical fan from the front of the engine in your Dodge Dakota requires a specific wrench. The spanner wrench is available from tool dealers and through the Dodge dealerships parts department, though it can be expensive. Many auto parts stores rent these wrenches as well as stocking a new fan assembly for your Dakota. The fan assembly threads onto the water pump hub, and does not require removal of the drive belt to remove.
Instructions
- 1
Open the hood and locate the negative battery cable. Follow it to the battery and remove the retaining bolt securing the cable end to the battery terminal with a wrench. Lift the cable off the battery and set it aside.
2Locate the bolts on the top section of the radiator shroud that secure the upper and lower halves. Remove the bolts with a socket and ratchet, then lift the top section of the shroud off the bottom section and remove it from the engine compartment.
3Place a spanner wrench with a pin adapter on it between the fan and water pump hub. There are four holes in the face of the water pump hub. Slide the two pins on the spanner into two of these holes.
4Grasp the fan blade with the opposite hand and spin the blades clockwise while holding the water pump hub with the spanner. The threads are right-handed, so turning it clockwise will loosen the blades.
5Caully lift the fan assembly out of the engine compartment and store it in an upright position so the silicone gel inside does not leak out. Remove the spanner from the engine compartment.

Mechanical Injector Removal

When fuel injectors are clean, they can enhance the performance of your vehicles engine. On the other hand, even injectors with minor clogging can have just the opposite effect. Although you can clean a fuel injector while its on the vehicle, you may want to remove it for a more thorough cleaning.
Significance
Sometimes fuel injectors are so clogged that a simple on-car cleaning might not be enough to fix the problem. Also, some injector cleaners are strong enough to damage other parts during on-car cleaning, such as the fuel pump, which consists partly of rubber. The only alternative is to remove the fuel injectors so that you can have them cleaned professionally.
Removal
Removing the injectors from a vehicle requires special equipment that costs as much as $6,000. Some vehicle models require much more work than others to remove the injectors from the car. The average price you can expect to pay per injector is about $30 as of 2011.
Time Frame
Many auto shops have cleaning machines that are equipped with reverse-flush features that work well for flushing out injectors. Once the fuel injectors have successfully been removed from the vehicle, expect the cleaning to take a little over half an hour.

Volvo 960 Liquid Gasket Removal

The valve cover on the Volvo 960 is finely machined and does not use a solid gasket as with most vehicles. Volvo instead requires the use of a liquid gasket. When you do any work requiring removal of the valve cover, a new liquid gasket should be applied. This necessitates removal of the old gasket. The process is tedious, but not difficult.
Instructions
- 1
Read the instructions for using the liquid gasket remover. Open the valve cover and expose the two surfaces where the liquid gasket was applied. Apply the gasket remover liberally on both surfaces and allow them to soak for approximately 10 minutes.
2Using the razor blade, carefully scrape the surfaces to remove the old gasket. Employ the putty knife in places where the razor blade wont fit. Continue to scrape, until all of the old gasket is gone. Wipe the surfaces clean with the shop cloth.
3Apply the gasket remover to both surfaces a second time and allow them to soak. Scrape the surfaces gently with either the razor blade or the putty knife and ensure that the entire surface has been cleaned of the old gasket. Wipe both surfaces with a shop cloth.

Heater Removal in a Subaru Legacy
The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan that Subaru has manufactured since 1989. The heating unit in a car is a small radiator that contains hot coolant from the engine. The coolant circulates through the heater when the heater is turned on, warming the interior of the car. The procedure for removing the heater in a Subaru Legacy is generally the same for all models made since 1998.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the negative battery cable with a socket wrench to prevent the engine from starting. Wait 10 minutes for the the air bag system to deactivate before continuing with the heater removal procedure.
2Place a clean container under the radiator drain, and open the drain plug with a socket wrench. Drain the coolant from the radiator into the container, and store it for later use. Detach the hoses from the heater below the center of the dashboard, and plug the open ends of the hoses with a clean shop cloth.
3Remove the radio from the center console. Disconnect the retaining screws on the center console with a socket wrench, and remove the center console. Detach the covers from the mounting bolts on the instrument panel with a trim remover, and remove the mounting bolts.
4Detach the trim from the lower part of the pillar in the center of the dash with a trim remover. Remove the covers for the instrument panel on both the driver and passenger sides. Disconnect the cable from the hood release lever. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness under the instrument panel.
5Detach the instrument cluster and glove compartment from the vehicle. Remove the cables for the ventilation control and the electrical connector from the heater. Disconnect the vacuum line from the housing for the blower motor, and detach the feeder wire from the antenna.
6Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the fuse box. Detach the covers from the lower steering column, and disconnect the retaining bolts from the steering column with a socket wrench. Allow the steering column to hang freely.
7Remove the retaining bolts for the instrument panel, and detach the instrument panel from the vehicle. Disconnect the control cables from the heater, and detach the electrical wiring harness from the blower motor. Remove the air duct between the blower motor and the heater. Lift the heater up and pull it out to remove it from the vehicle.
