How to Set Up a Parts Washer

A parts washer is a key piece of equipment in any repair facility or manufacturing plant. Parts washers utilize water and detergents at high temperatures and pressure to remove grease, oil, bits of metal and other such debris. Detergents designed specifically for parts washers aid in the removal of debris. Liquid soaps work best for degreasing while powders clean most aggressively. Jet sprays or power washing cycles ramp up the cleaning power of the machines.

Instructions

Set Up

    1

    Unpack the parts washer. Use care when lifting such a heavy object. Discard packing materials but keep warranty information or other accompanying paperwork.

    Lift the parts washer lid. Remove the pieces of the parts washer packed inside such as the timer, oil skimmer, basket and debris screen. Place these items aside.

    Move the parts washer into its permanent place. Select a position near a 115V (220AC) electrical outlet outfitted with GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, for maximum safety. Do not plug in the parts washer yet!

    Locate the bottom frame bar inside the washer. Fill the parts washer with water to that point.

    Return the debris screen and the basket to the parts washer. Close the lid. Plug in the washer.

    Find the timer on the oil skimmer. Select a time for the daily oil skimming. Fit the oil skimmer onto the parts washer.

    Move a 5 gallon bucket under the drain spout to catch skimmed oil. Plug in the oil skimmer.

    Locate the thermostat. Adjust the temperature to the manufacturers recommended setting.

    Find the wash cycle knob. Select a quick 10-minute cycle.

    Test the machines safety apparatus by lifting the lid during the cycle. Adjust the sensitivity switch located along the top of the washer if the machine fails to stop when the lid is lifted. Test again.

    Give the machine 10 to 12 hours to reach the optimum temperature. Add liquid or powder soap according to the manufacturer guidelines.

Windshield washing components all have specific jobs to do and they work in concert with each other to accomplish the major task of keeping the front or rear windshield surface clean and clear of debris. The entire system relies on pumps, motors, wiper arms and blades, reservoirs and windshield washing fluid to get the job done. Any one part can fail and result in the breakdown of the system.

Wiper Blades

    The wiper blades, made of rubber and sometimes having two or three blades, wipe over the window creating a seal that removes excess water and debris. They form a squeegee-like seal that always keeps force on the glass surface by use of a spring in the wiper arm. With a control knob on the dashboard or steering column, the speed and frequency of the wiper blade can be controlled.

Wiper Arms

    The wiper arms hold the rubber wiping blades in place with slots or snap-connectors. They have special metal hinges that allow for flex on curved surfaces. The base of the wiper arm has a spline slot for connection to the wiper motor main shaft. The wiper arms can be replaced as a unit which contains the arms and the rubber wiper blade inserts in one component.

Windshield Wiper Motor

    The windshield wiper motor sits inside the front windshield galley area. The motor contains an armature and a coil. The motor runs off the batterys 12-volt system and powers the windshield washing linkage arms by turning a splined shaft in a constant 360-degree rotation. The motor has a relay and fuse that protect it from overload and shorts.

Windshield Wiper Linkage

    The windshield wiper linkage consist of a number of rods that have hinged ends and connectors. The linkage arms, driven by the motor, permit a reciprocal motion that turns into a back-and-forth wiping motion. They travel back and forth with approximately a 130-degree arc, repeating the wiping motion so long as the motor drives it. The linkage arms require periods of lubrication to keep them from binding and to keep them turning smoothly.

Windshield Washer Reservoir

    The windshield washer reservoir consists of a plastic tank, usually bolted against the firewall inside the engine compartment. It holds washer fluid to a certain level, dispersing it through the use of a pump and feed line. The contents of the washer tank usually hold a mild soap-and-water solution or a factory-approved cleaning fluid.

Windshield Washer Fluid Pump

    The windshield washer fluid pump sits below the tank, recessed into the plastic mold. It runs on the batterys 12-volt system. It is designed to force washing fluid through a small plastic or rubber hose that travels up to the base of the wiper arm where the fluid gets sprayed on the window. The windshield washer electrical system protects it with a fuse and a relay.

Rear Windshield Washing System

    Many vehicles, including Toyotas, have a complete duplicate windshield washing system located in the rear of the vehicle to clean the rear window glass. They have only one arm and blade to clean a large rear view area. This arm and blade must be longer to accommodate a single surface area. The reservoir and pump typically sits in a recessed quarter panel area that has access through a flip-top lid. Linkage, driven by a motor, operates in the same fashion as the front window system.

Motor and Washer Delay Control

    The motor and delay control device actuates by an electronic circuit that senses a pulse that makes it operate only for a specific period of time. A separate electronic circuit allows the pump to pulse, releasing fluid for the wash cycle.

How to Fix a Windshield Washer Pump on a 1997 Chevy C 1500 Truck

When the windshield washer pumps fail on a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the windshield washer system cannot transfer fluid through the system tubing in order to clean the windshield. These pumps, located in the windshield washer tank, are the sole components responsible for moving fluid throughout the entire system. These pumps operate by running off the vehicles 12 volt electrical power supply. When the wash section of the windshield wiper arm is depressed, the wiper motor relay switches to a closed position allowing current to flow to the washer pumps. In the event of a pump failure, current still flows to the pump, but they will not operate.

Instructions

Removal

    1

    Remove the bolts holding the washer tank area cover to the truck with a metric ratchet and socket. Remove the two bolts holding the washer tank to the truck body with a metric socket and ratchet.

    Unplug the upper pump hose from the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical connector from the truck to the pump assembly. Lift the washer tank out of the truck. Pour the washer fluid from the tank into a drain pan.

    Pry the washer pump cover away from the washer tank with a flat-head screwdriver, and then set it aside. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the washer pumps. Disconnect the washer pump hose from the individual washer pumps.

    Twist and pull on each washer pump to remove it from its mounting grommet.

Installation

    5

    Set the new washer pumps into position and press down on them until they are completely seated in the rubber grommet holes. Reconnect their electrical connectors. Reconnect the wash pump hose to each pump.

    6

    Snap the pump cover onto the washer tank. Set the tank back into the truck and reinstall the bolts holding the tank to the truck. Torque the bolts to 53 inch-pounds with a torque wrench. Reconnect the upper pump hose to the hose running to the washer jets.

    7

    Refill the washer tank with new fluid and close the cover. Set the washer tank area cover into place and reinstall the bolts holding it in place with a metric socket and ratchet. Test the washer pumps.
