What Are the Blue & Red Valves on a Refrigerant Recovery Tank?

Standard refrigerant recovery tanks come equipped with both red and blue valves located at the top of the tank. The colors designate the different forms of refrigerant they recover.

    The red valve is a vapor valve used to recover refrigerant in a vapor state. Vapor recovery takes more time than recovery of liquid refrigerant. Care should be taken when recovering refrigerant in vapor state as it is under pressure and combustible.

    The blue valve is designated as a liquid valve used to recover liquid refrigerant. Removal of liquid refrigerant is a faster process than removal of vapor refrigerant, but the user may be exposed to additional hazards. Care must be taken in recovering liquid refrigerant as there is potential for frostbite if the refrigerant comes in contact with skin. Eye injury is possible in the event of a refrigerant splash.

Safety Tips

    Users should be licensed to handle refrigerant. Safety gear such as protective eye wear and protective gloves should be used. Always refer to the manufacturers instructions before attempting to operate any machinery.

How to Assemble a Harley Oil Tank Hose

There are only four possible oil hoses on any Harley-Davidson. One hose, usually called the "feeder line," carries oil from the oil tank to the oil pump. Another hose, usually called the "return line," carries oil from the engine to the oil tank. Harleys built after 1992 have a third line, usually called a "vent line," that connects the oil tank and crankcase. All Harleys have a way to drain the oil from the tank (sometimes it is a "drain line" and at other times a "drain-feed" line). All connections are straightforward and are made with either hose clamps or hex nuts.

Instructions

    Drain oil from the oil tank through a drain hose by loosening a hose clamp at one end of the hose with a flat-head screwdriver. Turning the screw causes the clamp to expand or contract. Pull the drain plug from the end of the hose when the clamp is loose.

    Loosen the hose clamps that connect oil hoses to possible T-fittings and elbow fittings by loosening the hose clamps there with a flat-head screwdriver. The hose clamp tightens the flexible hose to ridged metal connections on the fitting. When the clamp is loose pull the hose free.

    Loosen the hose clamp connection between the oil tank and the feeder line with a screwdriver. Tighten the connection between the feeder line and the fixed, threaded, oil pump fitting with an open-end wrench.

    Push the oil vent and oil return lines through the rubber grommets in the holes near the top front of the oil tank.

    Connect the crankcase end of the oil vent line to the fixed, threaded, crankcase fitting with an open-end wrench. Connect the oil pump end of the return line to the fixed, threaded, oil pump fitting with an open-end wrench.
