How to Read Metric Thread Pitch

The definition of metric thread pitch is the number of threads per millimeter. That means that if the size of a metric bolt is M3 .05, then there is half a thread every millimeter. That information is great if you are at the hardware store and you know what size you want. In order to know what to buy, you still have to know what you are looking for. With a little common sense and the right tool, reading metric thread pitch is something anyone can do.

Instructions

    Hold the fastener in question with one hand. Hold one set of teeth from a metric thread gauge up to the threads of the fastener with the other hand to see if they mesh.

    Alternate the sets of teeth from the thread gauge, if the first set does not match, try different sets of teeth until one of the sets of teeth on the gauge meshes perfectly.

    Read the size stamped on the correct set of teeth. The second number will indicate the thread pitch.

How to Thread a Tap

A tap is a tool used to make female threads, in other words, a hole that is threaded on the sides for a screw, bolt or other implement to thread into. The tap tool consists of the tap itself (cylindrical piece of metal tapered at one end with threads) and the tap handle. Create the hole first, then insert the tap into the hole to create the thread. Use cutting oil to lubricate the threading process.

Instructions

    Drill the correct diameter hole into the metal to the right depth that needs to be threaded.

    Wipe cutting oil around the taps thread. Place the end of the tap into the drilled hole at a 90-degree angle (perpendicular) to the surface of the hole. Push the tap and make a clockwise quarter turn before turning it counterclockwise to free the hole of metal chips.

    Turn the tap another clockwise quarter turn, before turning it counterclockwise again to remove the chips. Continue in this fashion until you thread the hole completely.
