How to Lathe Knurls Without a Knurl Tool

How to Lathe Knurls Without a Knurl Tool

Knurling is a process used in manufacturing to obtain a diamond-shaped pattern on metal parts. A knurled object gives a better grip than a smooth metal surface. Both knurl cutting and knurl rolling are employed to create the knurled effect. Knurl cutting involves cutting into the metal to create the diamond pattern; knurl rolling involves imprinting the pattern onto metal using heavy rollers. Knurling is typically done on a lathe with a specialized tool called a knurling tool. Knurling without a tool is tricky, but with some skill and precision, it is possible to create knurled objects on the lathe without a knurling tool.

Instructions

    1

Set your V-nose tool on its side in the lathe. Use a level to verify it is even . Clamp down to hold it in place.

    2

Make a single cut in your metal object with the V-nose. You need a way to index the spindle to make accurate cuts. This is accomplished by feeding the carriage past the blank and indexing the spindle.

    3

Continue to make start threads in your metal object with the V-nose, alternating between left and right. You want at least four starts, but the more the better, perably six or eight.

    4

Continue knurling using the left-right alternating process. You can knurl the entire length of the rod, or just a few inches depending on what you plan on using it for.
